Control systems for water and wastewater plants
Water plant is rarely in one place. The control system is as much about getting reliable data back from a distributed site as it is about the logic at any one of them.
We work on RO and DI plant feeding industrial processes, and on effluent and sewage treatment handling what comes back out. Schneider Modicon and Citect are common in this sector, and so are systems assembled over fifteen years by several different contractors.
Duty-standby rotation, backwash sequences and dosing control are where most of the logic sits. Redundancy configuration is where most of the inherited faults sit — Citect redundancy in particular is frequently configured in a way that has never actually been failover-tested.

Instrumentation first
On water plant the most common cause of bad control is a bad measurement — a fouled analyser, an unstable level signal, a flow meter installed too close to a bend. We check the instrument before rewriting the loop, because tuning a controller against a lying sensor produces a very well-tuned wrong answer.
